The star of Netflix’s“Sex Education” Emma Mackey told the Independent that she “wishes people would stop comparing” her to Margot Robbie.
“I genuinely just don’t see it in the least ,” she said. “Like, it’s lovely to be compared to Margot Robbie, but mostly I’d rather people specialise in the roles that we’re both doing instead of what we glance like.”
The similarities of the 2 actresses are undeniable, with the Independent stating that “they have an equivalent high cheekbones, expressive brows and square jaw.” However, Mackey is uninterested in the comparison and believes the movie industry encounters issue time and time again.
“Hollywood churns out people that look an equivalent and that we like to put people in boxes,” said Mackey. “It’s just a thing that we do as a species, we categorise people, we always have.”
Obviously, this isn’t the primary time that Mackey has heard the comparison – and Robbie has even commented thereon herself. In an interview with BBC Radio 1’s Ali Plumb, Robbie admitted that she was mistaken for the “Sex Education” star at The Apple Pan diner.
“Someone came up to me, i used to be eating a burger,” said Robbie. “And they were like ‘I loved you in ‘Sex Education,’ that show is so cool, we just started watching it.’ and that i was like ‘I’m so sorry, it’s not me.’”
Responding to a clip of that video with BBC Radio 1’s Greg James, Mackey said “I just love the ‘Oh, sorry, it’s not me’ – so sweet. It just made me laugh.
“It is sort of a running joke now, like have Margot Robbie and Emma Mackey been seen within the same room? But all the people that know me well don’t see it in the least . But I’ll take it!”
In “Sex Education,” Mackey stars as Maeve Wiley – the one that first convinces Otis (Asa Butterfield) to run an unsanctioned sex clinic as a business venture – and Maeve has quickly become something of a feminist icon. Again, Mackey doesn’t fully embrace the thought .
“I just believe equality for people, so it’s not such an enormous deal. I’d preferably be remembered for that than being an a–hole, so that’s good.”
