Precautions that must be taken when operating a forklift

As with any other type of machine, operating a forklift requires some basic precautions to avoid accidents. Do you know what they are? Check out some precautions that should be taken when operating a forklift.

These precautions can be divided into seven categories: operator conditions, transporting people, taking care of the forklift, taking care of pedestrians, taking care of the route, taking care of the load and taking care of storage.

Operator Conditions:

To “drive” the machine, the operator needs to be in optimal physical condition. In case of any discomfort, he should be removed from this type of work. In addition, it is desirable that the operator has a calm profile and a high capacity for concentration.

Transport of people:

Forklifts are designed to transport loads, not people. Therefore, never give a “free ride” to colleagues on the equipment. Do not allow anyone to climb on the forklift or its lift tower.

If, for any reason, it is necessary to make this elevation, the worker who is on the fork must be inside a safety cage with guardrail.

Forklift care:

Will the work start? Visually inspect the equipment for possible abnormalities. Check the weight of loads before lifting them. If in doubt, call the supervisor.

Clean the forklift at the end of the job so that the colleague receives clean equipment when starting his shift. In addition to being courteous, it avoids malfunctions caused by waste.

Finally, don’t improvise “maintenance” on the forklift. This is a role that should only be played by someone who understands the subject.

Pedestrian care:

As happens on public roads, with cars, pedestrian safety is the responsibility of whoever drives the forklift. Drive extra carefully when someone is around. Give preference to the pedestrian and always signal what you intend to do.

Be especially aware of “corners” that might hide crossing points from pedestrians. Slow down before those spots so you don’t get surprised.

Care During the Route:

The main tip in this case is to move only when you have a clear view of the path. So, if the load is high and preventing visibility, choose to transport in reverse. Ah! Slopes should also be done in reverse if the forklift is loaded.

Also remember that speeding presents risks. It makes maneuvers and turns difficult and can cause the forklift to tip over.

Finally, do not travel parallel to the other forklift. This shift must be done in a single file.

Cargo Care:

Before moving, test whether the load tilts sideways. Avoid carrying loose materials and making sudden stops. Pay attention to the pallets. They must be in perfect condition.

Storage Care:

Loads must not be left in locations that may obstruct access to fire extinguishers and emergency exits. Also note that the pallet trucks can support the weight of the loads, and that the floor is strong enough to withstand the weight of the loaded forklift. Get one on Rental

Choice when renting forklifts:

Is your business in need of forklifts? Choosing the supplier is a strategic situation. Therefore, prefer a company that knows the subject in depth, with an effective management model and prompt service.
